It was Friday again. How does the week go by so damn quickly! The fridge is near empty, as per usual, and this Friday night I would be dining solo.
A choice is before me: Head to the jam packed super market for supplies….or head over to Dizengof Center where Persian ready made delicacies await me at the Shehrezad stand. Fresh, warm and with endless variety, amongst the 20 odd food stands at the Center on a Friday morning, it's Shehrezad's lovely dill rice (baqala polo) and herb and meat sauce with dried Persian lemon (gohrmet sabzi) that catches my eye and wins my heart (via my stomach) every time.
Itzik Pourostamian is the head honcho at Shehrezad and has been in the food business in Israel for almost 20 years. A young looking 40-something, his broad smile is there to greet you every Friday, while he simultaneously manages to run the catering and event planning side of the business.
In addition to providing me and countless other Tel Avivians with no work homemade meals, including dishes like gondi (chicken and chickpea balls spiced with cardamom) gondi berengi (beef, rice and prune balls), dolmeh (cabbage rolls), and Halebibi (slow cooked rice and meat – Tbeet in Iraq), Shehrezad organizes and produces special events with authentic Persian food and decoration, like Persian tents, Persian carpets, bartenders in traditional Persian dress, and authentic Persian music.
Shehrezad will plan your entire event for 15 to 1000 people from top to bottom. One of their special packages is handling visiting bar mitzvah parties, organizing the entire event from the moment you step off the plane to services at the Western Wall, to the catered and fully managed party.
Despite their success on the event planning side of the business, lucky for me Shehrezad is not abandoning their roots in supplying food for delis, restaurants and food festivals, and will continue to provide me with all my favorites for the easiest and tastiest Friday night meal around.
