Wine and Dine(r)

"Don’t be deterred by the various dishes on the menu, the burgers at New York are considered the house specialty, if you are looking for a HAMBURGER, this is definitely the real thing." Yonatan Sternberg takes much pleasure in burgers with wine at New York, New York in Herzliya Pituach.

As you may have noticed from my previous articles, I consider myself a local “Yerushalmi” (a person from Jerusalem). However many years ago, well not that many, I was born, and even raised for several years, in the big apple. Another fact that you may have noticed is that I also consider myself somewhat of a carnivore and take much pleasure in indulging on quality meat and wine.

With this in mind, my good friend and I decided to drive all the way from Jerusalem to Herzliya Pituach and check out the burgers and meat at the kosher “New York New York” restaurant.

Don’t be fooled by the somewhat plain façade, once you enter the doors you are engulfed in a tribute to the diners so familiar to all New Yorkers. From the stylish booths, the street signs, the red brick wall and the faux Statue of Liberty, owner Yonatan assisted by his father Gideon left nothing to chance, and for the next two hours I felt like I was back in NY.

We started off with the chili con carne, which although tasty could have used a bit more heat. The lovely waitress suggested that we try the battered onion rings and fresh mushrooms which were served with Thousand Island dressing and devoured in no time. For our mains we decided to go for the rib eye steak and the hamburger. Don’t get me wrong the steak, which was served with sautéed onions and a red wine sauce, was tasty; furthermore the impressive assortment of wines would complement any of the steak dishes on the menu.

However, the burger is the cynosure of any classic New York style diner and meat restaurant. Don’t be deterred by the various dishes on the menu, the burgers at New York are considered the house specialty, if you are looking for a HAMBURGER, this is definitely the real thing. 300 grams of juicy red meat grilled to perfection, served on top of a fresh roll with an assortment of vegetables on the side. The restaurant also offers an assortment of toppings from fried onions through Szechuan stir-fried mushrooms.

Don’t worry, I haven’t forgotten about the wine. It is evident that a lot of thought was put into the wine selection. The menu includes some of the top wines by the Carmel and Yatir wineries. Try pairing a glass of Yatir’s Cabernet-Merlot-Shiraz or Carmel’s Petite-Sirah with your favorite burger or steak. Gideon also mentioned that they have recently begun working with the celebrated Castel winery, who’s Grand Vin is considered by many as one of the top wines in the country.

One might find it a bit difficult to pair wines with a burger from the local fast food chain. But at New York, New York, you won’t find it difficult at all. The quality meat, comfortable ambience and music really put you in the mood for a glass or, if you’re not driving, even a bottle.
