Well Aged and Elegant
Well Aged and Elegant Yonatan Sternberg
“On the palate you can find flavors of red fruits, plums and berries followed by a long and pleasant finish...” Yonatan Sternberg offers some insight into Flam Winery and its full-bodied Merlot.
Established in 1998 by brothers Golan and Gilad Flam, the Flam winery is situated among the beautiful Judean Hills near Jerusalem. After studying and training in Italy and Australia, winemaker Golan Flam returned to Israel and is currently in charge of Flam’s wine production. Gilad, a law and business graduate, is in charge of the winery's business and marketing strategies. Both “Hugh Johnson’s Pocket Wine Book” and “Rogov’s Guide to Israeli Wines” rank the Flam winery among the top wineries in Israel. Drawing grapes from vineyards in the Upper Galilee and the Judean Hills, Flam produces both varietal and non-varietal red wines as well as blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay.

Flam, Merlot, Reserve, 2004

General:

The grapes used to produce this wine were hand picked to ensure the highest quality. Before bottling, the wine was aged for 16 months in French oak barrels.

Tasting Notes:

Produced using 100% Merlot grapes, impenetrable royal purple color, this full bodied red offers lovely aromas of wood, fruits and flowers; particularly violets. On the palate you can find flavors of red fruits, plums and berries followed by a long and pleasant finish. This well balanced Merlot usually sells at around the NIS 140 mark.

Food Pairing:

The wine should go well with mild cheeses or elegant meat dishes such as the Italian Tournedo Rossini or classic French style steak dishes.

Tip of the week: Alcohol Level

Try to avoid combining salty food and wine with a high alcohol content. Doing so will usually make the wine taste bitter.
