Team Work Michael Lazar
So, to sum things up, the food here is excellent and the atmosphere is warm and inviting. If you live in the area, this is a good choice to make into your regular place. If you’re just passing through on your way to Tel Aviv, stop off, kick back and relax. Have a coffee and a bite to eat. If you’re not from around the neighborhood, come anyway. It is well worth the trip.
Hidden away behind large glass windows in what looks like the lobby of a residential building – one of the many buildings in this area that all look the same – lays a hidden treasure. Oslander Cafe Bistro is a family operation run by husband and wife team Maya, who does the cooking, and Yossi who deals with the customers and waits tables. One cannot help but feel comfortable here and due to the nature of the place, even the lone customer receives special and personal attention. The menu, while rich in variety, is not strict. This is really a case of ''you can have it your way''. Special requests are not frowned upon here. So what’s the downside? Well, it depends on how you look at it.

Situated in one of Tel Aviv’s northern-most neighborhoods, the Mashtela neighborhood is not exactly downtown. But that is also part of its charm. It’s quiet here! And peaceful. The perfect place to just forget about it all and relax. And what about the food? Well, the food here is fresh and made from the finest ingredients available. Maya terms it ''comfort food''. Not your high-class dishes with names that you can’t understand let alone pronounce, but simple, home-style cooking. The food is meticulously prepared and the emphasis is on freshness and healthy meals. One can find organic food, a large selection for the vegetarian and a variety of meat dishes. The menu includes an assortment of breakfasts, salads (such as a hot quinoa salad), sandwiches, pasta, homemade quiches, meat dishes and a children’s menu. The Dish of the Day, changes and ingredients may also change according to the season. Oh – and the prices are extremely reasonable.

Due to its somewhat unique location, Oslander offers something that most cafes cannot – the possibility to hold fully catered private events and parties for between 10 and 100 people, even on Saturdays. The venue includes the entire ''lobby'' of the building and extends over two floors. The bottom story, which is rearranged to hold a number of food-stations, is reserved for the adults, while the second floor is set aside for activities for the children. The day I was there, they were discussing a big bar mitzvah they were hosting over the weekend. You can also order take away; they will deliver it straight to your door. They also cater to private events that are not held on the premises. So come taste the food. I am sure that you’ll like what you eat.
