Red Wines for Less than 50 NIS
Red Wines for Less than 50 NIS Yonatan Sternberg
I often find it hard to shop for wines, especially when my budget is limited. Unfortunately I can’t pop open a bottle of the Golan Height’s, Katzrin (red) or a bottle Carmel’s Limited edition on a daily basis. With this in mind I went to the local wine stores in search of a good, pleasant, simple and in this case affordable red wine to accompany my meal.
I decided to sample two varietal wines as well as blended red produced by three leading Israeli wineries. Although the following wines are not complex, sophisticated and intriguing all three definitely provide a good value for your money and serve as great table wines.

Tasting Notes:

Golan Heights, Golan, Cabernet Sauvignon, 2007
Price: 41-47 NIS
Aged for six months in American oak barrels and made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, this varietal red offers pleasant aromas of dark berry fruits including: cherries and currants followed by scents of oak and vanilla.

Food Pairing:
The winery suggests serving the wine alongside grilled meats and sausages, tomato based pasta dishes and rich piquant stews.

Galil Mountain, Merlot, 2006
Price: 39-44 NIS
Medium bodied and almost garnet in color, this merlot gives off lovely aromas of berries and young plums along with hints of green pepper and thyme.

Dalton, Canaan Red, 2006
Price: 35-41 NIS
A blend of several grape varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Shiraz, this medium bodied red is showing plenty of red fruits, plums and raspberries followed by a slight hint of wood and cloves.

Tip Of The Week – Wine Shopping:
When out wine shopping, one thing to keep in mind is the fact that more money does not necessarily equal a better wine. At the end of the day your taste is the one that counts.
