I visited Calma in Ashdod on a Sunday night, right after a busy weekend, and found a place where I could start the new week calmly. Without a doubt, Calma is set at the best location in the city – right on Lido beach.
It seems as if it wasn't too long ago when 3 restaurateurs from Tel Aviv (one of them would be Aviv Mazliach) received a tempting offer – to open up Calma next to the sea in Ashdod, only it now celebrates its 5th birthday. Moran, with whom I got out of the city, couldn't stop smiling at the site of the huge parking space next to the restaurant. Inside we could choose between the interior space and the seats on the beach. And it wasn't a hard thing to do.
Out of Calma's rich menu we started with 2 special dishes. Pincho sirloin is creative and surprising – sirloin skewers filled with green onions - and fried breaded cauliflower that was served with sweet chili sauce. True, I've had a chance to cook this one at home, but it never turned out to be as good as this one.
As you recall, we're talking about a Sunday night. Still, the restaurant was filled with many happy people. Add the intoxicating view, and you get a vibrant place. As for us, we were ready for our main courses. For me – a 300 g. portion of entrecote steak, grilled and served with chimichurri sauce and soft potato puree. We took our coffee outside on the beach. The dessert that came with it was one of the best I've ever had: a scoop of coconut ice cream, wrapped in sugared pecan nuts, served with whipped cream and toffee syrup. The coconut tasted so juicy, I couldn't help but dreaming about my next exotic vacation.
And so it turns out Calma is one of the best beach restaurants in Israel: it is welcoming, and serves high quality food and view. And here are a few more things you need to know about Calma: Private room events include up to 40 guests, smoking area is available in a designated room and soon we'll be able to enjoy Friday noon parties at Calma – with live shows, DJs, and the beautiful sun.
