Houses from Within

Weekend of Open Houses in Tel Aviv – Jaffa: 17-18-19 of May 2012

The biggest architectural event in Israel – Houses from Within – celebrates the urban environment of Tel Aviv-Jaffa for the sixth year in a row, with dozens of open houses, tours of public buildings of unique architectural value, tours of landscape development projects, peeks into hidden gems in the city, presentation of large building projects that will be built in Tel Aviv-Jaffa and will impact the lives of us all, activities for children dealing with building and the environment, and more.
The event will be held on the backdrop of the Tel Aviv-Jaffa Art year, with a special emphasis on activities dealing with the seam between architecture and art, such as the home of artist Sammy D. in Florentine, tours of the renovated Habima building with architect Ram Karmi as well as in the new Shtriker Conservatory (with musical accompaniment), creative activities for children inspired by Nachum Gutman, a unique encounter with the mural restorer, invited especially from Europe to restore the splendid murals in the Jerusalem hotel located in the American colony neighborhood, various activities inspired by The Exchange, the new film by Eran Kolirin (the director of The Band's Visit), that examines the environment in an original and ground breaking manner, and more.

In the upcoming program, emphasis will also be placed on green projects that will demonstrate various methods of energy efficiency in residences and construction. Some fascinating initiatives are currently under way in the city, and visits to exciting and inspiring projects are planned.

This year, the French Ambassador will open his home as part of Houses from Within. The home of the French Ambassador is located in Ajami neighborhood in Jaffa, and is a spacious villa in the International style, planned by architect Yitzhak Rappaport, with oriental interior design that combines beautiful and original Art Deco pieces, master carpentry work and a collection of contemporary French art.

Another unusual tour will be held this year in the building that was the site of the first broadcast, marking the opening to the public of the building that has been closed for 64 years, from which the Declaration of the State of Israel was broadcast, with the original equipment still found in the cellar (alongside the original, slightly crumbling sketches and assembly instructions).

Open your mind and your eyes to the built environment is the slogan accompanying the Houses from Within project throughout the world.
