"By drawing himself, he gives himself shape… this is the self in the new meaning, that was foreign to him so far, because his own self now appears as an object of what is active and creative inside him" (K. G. Jung, 1993). Irit Mor about a new exhibition in Gal-On Gallery

Portrait, an exhibition composed of three separate series, from 2005 to 2011, in which Droval crosses the borders of the personal, the private, the external and the internal. Droval places the act of painting a self-portrait and the product of this act as a tool for creation, examination and development, and as an added value that is revealed to also be a therapeutic process in the sense of "spiritual wellbeing" and "self-maintenance".

The exhibition is composed of three stages that I defined as "a chain of observations".

The Personal Portrait series combined looking in the mirror, which is a basic, critical and driving stage in the encounter with the subject, with himself. This stage appears as a technical action, but it is also reverberates as Lacan's Mirror stage (2003), and therefore also holds psychological significance.

The Dresses series – painting that contains both the signifier and the signified in a symbolic object that points at unconscious content. They rose from the depth of the soul, through creative thought processes. The painting is a visual, interpretative text and appears like a riddle that must be deciphered.

The Photo-collage series – the 'self' as echoing of the sarcastic question of 'who am I' and the order – 'Know thyself'. Works that are based on the use of photographs appear as a metaphor, and as such become a new reality that the artist wishes to continue to investigate.

Dov Droval was born in 1950 in the former USSR.

He has lived and worked in Israel since 1977.
