Broadway Bagel

“So, what have we got here? An American diner with authentic American bagels, Norwegian salmon direct from Norway, a tortilla that had arrived from Mexico, and a Belgian waffle from Belgium. No need to go abroad this summer…” Orly Peresh Azulay feels like she’s arrived on Broadway at Broadway Bagels in Haifa.

It’s afternoon. It’s hot. The hunger has already been nagging for a while and this is exactly the time for Broadway Bagel. Broadway Bagel is an American-diner style restaurant with a special motif, energy and atmosphere. The portions are large, the atmosphere is rollicking and full of life. This is the place to be if in the small city of Haifa to feel like you’re on Broadway.

The restaurant is kosher dairy and offers a range of breakfasts, pastas, fish, soups, salads an other tasty dishes. As I took a peek at the menu, I was astonished to discover nine different breakfasts – the Canaanite, Norwegian, Mexican, Healthy, Indulgent and more. Each dish is unique and has got some magical touch differentiating it from every other breakfast. Seductive. Soon there will be a special line of sushi at Broadway bagel. There are excellent lunch specials and a broad selection of dishes that can be ordered for take-away. Broadway also offers a catering service for events or will be happy to host intimate events up in their gallery level.

But I came for the bagel at Broadway Bagel and won’t be persuaded to order anything else, especially since my partner can always be persuaded to order something for himself that I like and share with me. I ordered the Norwegian bagel – a bagel served open-face with smoked salmon, mushrooms, onion and sour cream. All of this is topped in hot melted cheese. The dish is huge and could easily feed two people. The bagel is fresh, crisply toasted and flavourful.

The combination of the salmon, the onion and mushrooms was aromatic and interesting and the dish was placed under the broiler for just the right amount of time. A delightful and smile-invoking dish. I convinced my partner to order the salsa tortilla – the tortilla comes filled with goat cheese and sautéed vegetables topped with salsa and accompanied by a small side salad. My partner, immediately understanding the fate of his dish, split it in half and gave me my portion from the get go. We very enjoyably ate together, pleased with the dishes we’d ordered.

For dessert we ordered a massive Belgian Waffle – the most gluttonous dish you can possibly order. The round Belgian Waffle is topped in freshly whipped cream, surrounded by ice cream in various flavours and on top of all of this is a delicious chocolate syrup crisscrossing the dish and lending it a chocolaty flavour. What a treat! It’s not really necessary to point out that we polished this off in a short number of minutes and immediately rectified any imagined drop in blood sugar.

So, what have we got here? An American diner with authentic American bagels, Norwegian salmon direct from Norway, a tortilla that had arrived from Mexico, and a Belgian waffle from Belgium. “No need to go abroad this summer”, my partner offered. In truth, he’s got a point. With a restaurant like Broadway Bagel right near the house, we took a world tour for a pretty laughable price. Even so….I hope he was kidding.
